Program Requirements
The Peace Corps Prep program prepares undergraduates for international development fieldwork and potential Peace Corps service. Students admitted to the program build four core competencies through interrelated coursework, hands-on experience, and professional development support.
Training and Experience in a Specific Work Sector
- Complete three courses that align with one of the following specific work sectors: Education, Health, Environment, Agriculture, Youth in Development, and Community Economic Development.
- Accumulate 50 hours of volunteer or work experience in that same work sector.

Foreign Language Skills (Requirements Vary)
- Students who want to serve in Latin America (Spanish-speaking) must complete two classes at the 2000-level.
- Students who want to serve in West Africa (French-speaking) must complete one class at the 2000-level.
- There are no explicit language requirements for students who want to serve in other countries.
Intercultural Competence
- Take at least one of these core courses: GSGS 3030, ANTH 2120, LPPS 3210, EDLF 3240.
- Take two additional electives from the above list of core classes or these: any GDS course, ANTH 2400, ANTH 2430, ANTH 3129, ECON 4430, ECON 4610, EVSC 2010, EVSC 3200, HIAF 2002, HILA 2002, PHS 3825, PHS 5015, SOC 3480, CORE for Credit (GSGS 3210-3220-3230).
- Note: Students who are Global Studies majors meet this requirement.
Professional and Leadership Development
- Have your resume critiqued by University Career Services (UCS).
- Attend a workshop or class on interview skills at UCS.
- Develop at least one significant leadership experience and be prepared to discuss it thoughtfully. For example, organizing a campus event, leading a work or volunteer project, or serving on the executive board of a student organization.
Completing the Peace Corps Prep Program
- Submit a completed Exit Checklist to the Peace Corps Prep Program Advisor when you have completed all program requirements.
- Note: Peace Corps Prep students who apply for Peace Corps service should scan and attach the signed Exit Checklist to their Peace Corps application with the name “PC Prep Checklist.” If you apply to Peace Corps before completing a requirement, you should still submit a signed Exit Checklist - write: “[Activity]: planned [month/year]” for any incomplete requirement.
